True to being the DEDICATED EMPLOYEE that I am to provisions… I traveled ALL the way to Seattle, WA and visited Theo Chocolate Factory to get a tour of their chocolate factory.

(It’s a tough job, I know).

Located in the lovely city of Seattle… Theo Chocolate tours are offered for the very reasonable price of $6 per person. I went in to see exactly how one of provisions best selling chocolates were made and to learn more about the process of chocolate making. After all, I consume enough of the good stuff- I should know what goes into creating my satisfying lover… CHOCOLATE!

These are cacao beans where chocolate come from. Aren’t they gorgeous?! Chocolate grows on trees, folks!

I learned SOOOO much from the tour provided by Theo at their factory from a very personable, witty, entertaining tour guide. She did a great job keeping my family entranced about what goes into making a bean-to-bar chocolate bar, which apparently is not the way all chocolate is made.

Theo uses green energy sources to power their factories!

(Side Note: My mother insists that I note that she is usually much more beautiful than this picture portrays her to be- with a HAIRNET on. Here, she is smelling cocao beans).

I must admit… I am a sucker for shows like the Biggest Loser or for those occasions when Dr. Oz is on Oprah because they tell a great story and focus on how good-health changes lives drastically for the better. This might be the first upcoming generation where American children are  living less healthy lives than their parents. This issue goes beyond obesity (which is a major issue).

My brother is 180 lbs and 6 ft 3- He goes to a fast food restaurant for breakfast every Monday morning and orders the crappiest food for ones body that you can imagine. I give him a look of disgust and he tells me that “his metabolism is fast and he doesn’t have weight issues, so why should  he care?” He used to eat fast food all of the time, but in an attempt to try and get “buff,” he cut all the fast food out of his diet and he admits to feeling a big difference in how his body felt.  He had more energy, for one thing, and his skin looked better.

1. provisions will be one of vendors participating!

2. The other vendors at the market feature locally produced seasonal fruits and vegetables, handmade cheeses, organic breads, cut flowers and potted plants, area roasted coffee, and New York state wines.

3. Approximately a dozen vendors will occupy the 16 former fish stalls that line South Street between Fulton and Beekman Streets.

4. It is twice a week and the perfect place to pick up fresh and delicious products in the beautiful, historical Seaport.

The old 1883 Fulton Market building, c. 1940, was razed in 1948.

Want something REALLY local?… South Street is Barbara G. Mensch’s evocative tribute to the lost world of Lower Manhattan’s Fulton Fish Market. This book gives great insight into how life used to be down by NYC Historical South Street Seaport and Brooklyn Bridge. As a young photographer in the early 1980s, Barbara Mensch bonded with this particular group of “authentic New Yorkers,” becoming a confidante for their life stories, which were often filled with hardship, mystery, and misadventures. These striking photographs capture the unique personality and fierce secrecy of their vibrant working-class culture.

Pictured back when it was the Fish Market. I remember the days the Fish Market was down here. Maybe not the days pictured here…. but people still ask for the Fish Market. Someone just came in today asking if it still exists down here.

These photographs are Barbara Mensch’s tribute to the lost world of Lower Manhattan’s Fulton Fish Market. For more than a century, a tightly knit community of workingmen, many of them immigrants or children of immigrants, thrived in their nocturnal jobs as fishmongers under the base of the Brooklyn Bridge.  Resistant to government regulations and corporate encroachment these men worked in a closed, internally-policed world that was deeply hostile to outsiders.

Many of the images were taken in 1979-1983, a time of profound change in the political and economic landscape of Lower Manhattan. The waterfront below the Brooklyn Bridge was targeted for economic revival, spurred by the demolition of important locales in the fish market, existing piers, working storefronts, saloons and hotels to make room for new commercial spaces, including a shopping mall.
